Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that non-selectively activates melanocortin receptors (MC1R–MC5R). MC1R activation stimulates melanogenesis, producing a protective eumelanin tan with reduced cumulative UV exposure, while MC3R/MC4R activity in the CNS drives its secondary effects on libido and appetite suppression. It is often used by patients with fair skin, a history of sun damage, or photosensitivity disorders, under supervision to titrate dose and monitor pigmentation changes.
